Complaint:
Complaint 1:
At high altitudes (over approx. 3000 meters above sea-level) the navigation main menu sporadically displays the fault message "Drive unavailable,
temperature too high".
The following functions are restricted due to the shutdown of the hard drive.
2010-2020 Mercedes Benz Truck GL 450 (164.871) V8-4.6L (273.923) www.168motive.com Page 193
- Navigation
- Voice control
- Address book
- Music register (downloaded music onto the head unit hard-drive)
- Gracenote database for identifying album, track and performer information on an audio CD
Complaint 2:
The navigation main menu permanently displays the fault message "Drive unavailable, temperature too low or too
high"
Cause:
Re 1.)
The hard drive shuts down at high altitudes (over approx. 3000 m) and when the temperature of the hard drive is high.
a) At low altitudes the message disappears and the COMAND unit (A40/3) operates without problems. This is due to a safety feature created to
protect the hard-drive from permanent damage.
b) High hard drive temperatures are increased by high volume settings especially in vehicles without sound system (SA code 810), high outside
and engine temperatures and unfavorable settings on the heating/air conditioning. With the altitude increase and decreasing of air around
hard-drive assembly, the HDD starts the shut down process as the surrounding head unit temperature also reaches around 55 degrees Celsius.
The head unit is working as specified in this use case.
Re. 2.)
There is a hardware fault in the COMAND unit (A40/3).
Remedy:
Remedy 1.)
To prevent damage to the hard drive, it is shut down at high altitudes and high temperatures. This is due to a safety feature (series production
configuration). => Do not replace any equipment!
Remedy 2.)
If the fault occurs constantly, replace the COMAND APS (A40/3). Refer to EPC.
Note:
If the vehicle is fitted with a COMAND APS (A40/3) with PIN theft protection, the PIN code must be recorded in the VeDoc system. Pay attention
to the relevant information during initial startup with DAS / Xentry Diagnostics.

The electrically folding 3rd seat row makes noises while folding up and down, or the folding function does not work at all.
A warning message about locking the 3rd seat row may also appear in the display.
Cause:
The following causes may apply.
1. The 3rd seat row has stresses in its frame
2. The electric motors for the folding movement are defective
3. The locking mechanism sticks or is inoperative
Remedy:
Note:
As you go through the repair, please check the actions you performed in the attached diagnosis tree. When finished with the repair, please include the
filled out diagnosis tree (including original customer complaint at he bottom) with the parts to be sent to the QEC.
Re. 1.
Before parts of the 3rd seat row or the entire frame of the 3rd seat row are replaced, any existing stresses should first be eliminated. To do this,
unscrew and retighten the bolts connecting the 3rd seat row to the body.
Note:
It may be necessary to rock the seats manually in order to relieve the stresses in the 3rd seat row
Re. 2.
In the event of complaints the electric motor of the folding seat can be replaced individually rather than the entire seat frame as previously.
Re. 3.
Seat cannot be moved via the operating switches
- Check the connections of the seat adjustment motor (if the seat adjustment motor is defective, see "2")
- Check the seat adjustment operating switches
- Read out fault codes (if the seat adjustment motor is defective, see "2")
- Rectify faults in the electric seat adjustment
a) Lock not engaged in loading floor position (folded down)
- Check whether there are any objects under the seat
- Check whether the backrest can be locked by pressing it into the loading floor position
- If "no", continue with step 3b)
- If "yes", loosen seat and bolt back down again in order to eliminate stresses
- If the complaint is not rectified, replace cushion frame
b) Lock not engaged in driving position (folded up)
- Remove load compartment cover (roller blind) and check upper backrest lock
- If the warning lamp does not go out, there is a fault in the locking system, so replace the locking unit (see AR 91.12-P-1110 gy)
- If the warning lamp goes out, there are stresses in the seat, so loosen seat and bolt back down again in order to eliminate stresses
- If the complaint is not rectified, replace backrest frame. (Backrest frame is not available as an individual spare part. You must order the complete
backrest assembly.)
