1995 e300 Diesel - Smell & Smoke

Hey everyone, I drove a 95 e300 for about 40 minutes today and observed a few things I would like to know more about. First thing is while the car is running, it smells a bit like diesel fuel. I don't know enough about diesels to know if this is just normal. I can't imagine it is. After I was done driving it, I felt a little strange from smelling it for so long.
