E320 Wagon: Why does folding the rear seats lock the front pass seat?

Hi -- this problem repeatedly annoys me about this car, any suggestions?: When the rear seats are folded down the front passenger seat automatically slides all the way forward, making it impossible for any adult to sit there. There is more than enough space between the seat-back and the folded down seats. Any way to get around this? Thanks....
