2007 E350 Front End Noises - how to diagnose?

Car has about 207k miles, over 7 owners, and is in need of more than a few things to get up to daily driving condition. High priority now is the noise coming from the front end. I'm getting some popping and maybe some clunking. I prefer to DIY, but if a job is really best done at the dealer or an independent garage, let me know.
