220SEb distributor play causing misfires?

Hi all, I have a new-to-me 1963 220SEb that drives beautifully, when it wants to… The distributor has 20-30 degrees of rotational slop, not counting the spring-back mechanical advance. In my experience with Porsche engines, this means the distributor drive shaft/pinion isn't shimmed properly. To check my theory, I removed the distributor pinch clamp and reinstalled the distributor; now the play is gone!
