wheel madness , which one?

I bought my car used a few years ago, a 1990 300 SL . Previous owner had replaced the factory wheels with AMG 17" alloys. The car is too low, its so easy to contact parking curbs and spoil the front lower flare out. This morning I had a flat tire in the driveway , after replacing the flat with the spare I noticed two things: 1. spare is a 16"alloy with 225/55 R 16 tire. 2. its actually taller than the 17" which has 225/45 17ZR XL Michelins that I purchased new to replace the thinking the... wheel madness , which one?
