M104 valve covers: magnesium vs aluminum. How to tell?

I've read, in various threads here and elsewhere, that the valve cover for an M104 can be made of either magnesium, or aluminum. My question: is there a way to tell? I know that magnesium will burn if lit, but that seems an impractical test. I've also read about the vinegar test, but I'm not sure i have enough unpainted metal there to test it for sure. I think my next project is going to be the valve cover gasket and related grommets, etc. My valve cover's finish is flaking off, as... M104 valve covers: magnesium vs aluminum. How to tell?
