2003 c230k oil level check hangs up...

I'm back ,, no longer have the 300e4m , new car is a 2003 c230k coupe ,,, the dash display needs changing but when it's readable I try to check the oil level and I get no response ... just the "turn key on with engine off" message ... (with the key on and engine off) ,, oil level display function had worked previously... Is this an oil level sensor issue or something else... Also what is the cheapest code reader that can pull ESP codes? I definately don't want to pay the dealer for a code... 2003 c230k oil level check hangs up...
