Who has DIY'd a rear axle?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to take the axle shaft out, in ISTA they have a special tool that is almost $400... no thanks. I've seen some say crow bar, but curious if anyone has found a different wrench or tool that fits and works? Or if you used a crow bar, what was the process?
