Weird waxy residue on fuel hoses/gas seepage

In the heat of the moment, I didn't think to take photos. There was what appeared to be a waxy goo, almost like fresh cosmoline, on the brand-new fuel hoses under the car at the pump/filter assembly. It had run to the lowest point. I could not find evidence of a leak on those hoses, and the substance bared zero odor.
