I can't express my thanks enough to the Benzworld community. As part of my appreciation, below is my experience replacing a w124 ball joint.
1. All of my prior W124 and R129 experience was with non serviceable ball joints. In other words, I've begun (ordering parts and borrowing tools) only to find out, the entire arm needs to be replaced.
2. I confirmed the diagnosis of a bad joint by spraying the offending ball joint with lithium grease (the boot was in bad shape). The grind went away...
