E-320 radio & sound system

My 2000 E-320 is equipped with the standard OEM sound system. I have never been impressed with the reception or the sound quality. Recently it started to make a horrible hissing & harsh screechie noise that modulates from low to a loud piercing sound that will drive you out of the car. It appears to be sensitive to the radio volume setting and the frequency range of music being played. My dealer replaced the radio which resulted in a moderate improvement but far from acceptable.
