My '75 416 with 100 HP stock OM352 just started knocking. Came sneaking running 40 MPH and got worse, up to a level similar to someone hammering the side of the engine. Got towed home.
Checked oil level and drained 2 liters in a cotton filter. No debris...
Started it up. Now the sound comes and goes. At times it runs normal, at times there is a weak knocking and then sometimes it gets bad....
