Rear wheel bearings-when do they need to be lubricated?

Hi, I'm new the wonderful world of 107s. I just got a 350SL in rather neglected condition. I'm working on getting the brakes operating, so I'll have the rear calipers and rotors off soon. I've been reading up on the rear wheel bearings, but it seems that folks are either replacing the bearings as PM, or because they failed, but no one mentions just taking the shaft flange out, repacking the bearings, and putting it back together. Does the grease last forever? Do the bearings always need... Rear wheel bearings-when do they need to be lubricated?
