oil filter

I purchased my first oil filter from the MB dealership here in Louisville KY. When I got home and took it out of the box the filter had an orange perforated wrapping around it. In the 10 years I've owned my 500SL I've never seen that on the other filter brands. So my (hope it's not too stupid) question is does the wrapping stay on or do I take it off before installing?
