Starter 'tap, tap' Question

Most car guys that have been in the hobby for a while know of the 'tap, tap' trick to get a starter to engage. My newly-acquired 2001 SL600 has failed to start on 3 occasions in maybe the last 50 starts. And when I say failed to start, I mean turn the key, everything powers up -- lights, horn, everything works -- and then nothing. Silence.
