450SL sluggish start

Hello, I have had my '78 450SL since the late '90's. I drive it once a week and keep it in pretty good shape. One thing that has always bothered me is its sluggish start. When I turn the key, the engine turns over for about 1-3 seconds depending on hot or cold start, then eventually cranks. This obviously does not occur in modern cars, but used to be somewhat normal. My question is, is replacing the current OEM starter with an aftermarket starter a good idea? I have done it in... 450SL sluggish start
