1998 E320 Bose sound -- read speakers not working, any tips?

I just bought a 1998 E320 wagon. It has the Bose sound system (with a cassette, CD Changer and Analog cell phone!) The sound system is stock as far as I can see. The front speakers sound fine, radio and CD changer work well. But the read speakers do not make any noise. The fader control will turn down the front speakers but still no noise from the rear speakers. Is this a known failure pattern?
