fuel tank fill-up problem

For the first time ever, the tank backed up just short of spilling out. I had the pump handle on the auto setting, and it stopped just under halfway. I thought it was the pump's problem, as sometimes you have pump handles that are worn and auto lock doesn't stay still. I went back to continue and it shut off again within two seconds--that's when I noticed the problem. From what I've read up about it, it seems like this is typically the evap canister, often caused by people "topping off"... fuel tank fill-up problem
