W209 cabriolet water bags

We are talking about these on MBclub.co.uk and someone said he'd heard of owners carefully cutting them away with no apparent issue. They do sound strange and I find it hard to believe they are there to hold water. Maybe they are there from the days that Mercedes over-engineered? (long gone sadly!) Anybody have more information please? Comments? Thanks from over the pond!
