Rod knock or something else

Hi, I have joined this forum just now but have been viewing discussions on various topics. I have recently bought a 2014 E300 (diesel hybrid) which had a pound ticking noise and I suspected it to be the hydraulic lifters. I replaced the oil which liked liked (green) gear oil and smelt burnt. The cam shaft looks ok but didn't know how to check the hydraulic lifters. I replaced oil and filter, put some wynns hydraulic lifters cleaning additive and hoped for the best. Couldn't dare to drive the... Rod knock or something else
