Warm Up Necessary?

In the cold northern climate here in MN, I have not been doing any real warm up of the 00 E430 before driving. I usually start her up, wait for idle down from choke, then drive away gently. No wind up or hard acceleration til the temp needle starts moving up from 40. A fellow MB owner tells me I am doing it wrong, should let it idle 10-15 minutes (or more) until the car is at operating temp before driving off. Supposedly causes less engine wear than driving cold.
