G500 1999 Instrument Cluster

I have just bought a new instrument cluster for my 1999 G500. The old LED had blanked out and the covering was cracked. I spoke to my local MB dealer who warned me against fitting the new one myself. Am I right in assuming that: mileage, service interval, and all the other info that is shown in the LED panel is somehow stored in the instrument cluster? If I just pop the new one in I will lose all the old info or are the MB delaer trying to scare me in to getting them to do it? Any help in... G500 1999 Instrument Cluster
