2009 ML350 Help needed!

My son's 2009 ML350 intermittently won't start. When the key is in the ignition and turned, there is no sound at all or any attempt to start. This only happens occasionally and eventually the car starts. Sometimes, holding the key in the start position for a minute allows it to eventually start.
