SRS

The SRS light on my '95 S500 (116K) takes from ca.12 to 22 seconds to go out after starting the engine. The car had 89K when I bought it three years ago; it now has 114,000, and the light has NEVER ONCE failed to go out within the timeframe described above. My question: is the SRS system not engaged when the light is on, or is this just some kind of "electrical quirk?" More importantly, in order to be safe, am I supposed to sit in the car until the light goes out before driving... SRS
