Slow start 1985 380sl r107

I recently bought a 1985 380sl in non-running condition. I'm just now trying to get it back on the road, but the starter is very weak. Sometimes it will slowly turn the motor over just 2-3 times. I've only had it hooked up to a battery via jumper cables and also tried to jump it off a truck. I've read about solenoids and bad starters, but what should I be diagnosing before I purchase parts?
