Confused and Cranky

A few recent threads have used the term "crank" to mean start and run, e.g. "IT CRANKED!!!!" or "engine won't crank". This is confusing. To me, crank means to turn over the engine using the starter motor or in olden days using a hand crank attached to the engine main shaft. After it is cranked it (hopefully) starts to run. That is all.
