Airmatic error 5503, recovery time during filling of central reservoir is too long.

A couple months ago I replaced my screaming airmatic pump with one from ebay. It was an el cheapo. Worked for 2 months nice and quiet. Today, error 5503, runs for a long time, doesn't quite get the job done. I sprayed soapy water on the valve block and no leaks. Assuming it's a weak compressor. Question: does the pump itself release pressure as well? For example, if I raise the car to full height with the 'raise' button and then press it to 'lower' the car, what part actually bleeds...
