Where does the dip stick tube go?

Changed the oil in the GLS450 for the first time myself today. (It was on dealer maintenance until last month.) When I stuck the suction tube down into the dipstick tube, and hit something, I stopped, pulled it up about 1/4" as I always do, and started pumping. When it sucked air, I only had 2 or 3 quarts. So, I pushed it past the "bottom" and kept going, until I ran out of tubing. Never hit "bottom" again! Pumped some more, and maybe got another quart or two. So, I started pulling it... Where does the dip stick tube go?
