W210 M113 Fan Shroud Removal

This DIY project is starting like so many of mine. What should be simple.... It looks like you have to actually pull the fan/fan clutch assembly off first to remove the shroud - it simply will not pull out of the car - the blades hold it. Is this true? Or is there some insider trick? On my M119 R129 they did it a bit smarter - a 2 piece assembly - the inner part is removed only with the removal of the fan assembly but the main outer part slides right out. Gives you room to work.
