Center Bearing Replacement: Do I need to remove entire exhaust

I'm going to be tackling a center bearing replacement in my 2000 SL600 soon. The repair manual says I need to remove the entire exhaust system. Is that necessary? I got under the car yesterday to take a look, and it looks like I need to break the connections at the exhaust manifolds, which looks challenging in that it's pretty tight up there to get a wrench on the nuts.
