Fuel gauge reading inaccurate

The fuel gauge on my 2000 S500 reads past F when full, but only drops to 3/4 when empty. By empty, I mean stranded on the side of the road empty. I have checked the tank sending unit for operation. Checking resistance across the contacts yields a range from 10 ohms to 210 ohms empty to full. I verified that with another (albeit used) sending unit which produced the same test readings, and produces the same result on the gauge. I have had my instrument cluster backlighting rebuilt...
