Replacing Lower Control Arm Bushings - Steps and Spring Compressor

I'm looking at the factory service manual instructions for replacing the front springs to guide me in replacing the lower control arm bushings. They state that if the special pit lift cradle thingy is not used then a spring compressor should be used. However I've seen posts on here (e.g. from Nobby) saying that as soon as the shock absorber is disconnected from the LCA almost all of the tension is removed from the spring.
